FDNY firefighter Patrick Brady dies battling fire in Brooklyn, NYC

BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn (WABC) — An 11-year veteran of the FDNY died while responding to an all-hands fire in Brooklyn on Saturday night.

Firefighter Patrick Brady, 42, was operating on the roof of a fire at 9407 Kings Highway in Brooklyn when he suffered a medical episode and went into cardiac arrest, officials said.

Fellow FDNY Firefighters and FDNY EMS immediately treated him. He was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he died.

“Firefighter Brady came from a family of firefighters – all dedicated to protecting the lives of their fellow New Yorkers,” said outgoing Mayor Eric Adams during a somber press conference held at Brookdale hospital early Sunday morning.

On Sunday morning, fellow firefighters and first responders arrived at Brady’s firehouse in Brownsville for a bunting ceremony to honor his life and legacy. Brady was given a dignified transfer earlier Sunday morning.

After graduating from the fire academy, Brady was assigned to Engine 227 in Brooklyn before transferring to Ladder 120 in 2022.

Brady’s ties to New York’s Bravest run deep. His two brothers, Jimmy and Brian, are FDNY Firefighters. His cousins and uncles are also FDNY Firefighters.

FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito spoke from the hospital about Brady’s love of being a firefighter.

“This is a sad day for the New York City Fire Department and the City of New York,” Esposito said.

“Our firefighters are out there day and night protecting the people of the city. Patrick Brady was one of them and he was an outstanding firefighter. His loss, it’s a tremendous loss obviously for his fire company, the fire department and the city as a whole. Please pray for Patrick Brady’s family.”

Brady is the second FDNY line-of-duty death in the past two weeks.

On October 29, paramedic Salih Abdur Rahman, 46, died after a shift at the FDNY’s training academy on Randall’s Island. Abdur Rahman had been with the FDNY since 2002.

FDNY Paramedic Salih Abdur Rahman died last month while on duty.

Brady lived in Far Rockaway, Queens. He is survived by his wife, Cara.
