Texas deputy fatally shoots popular food influencer during confrontation

A food influencer with more than two million followers online was fatally shot by police this week. According to TMZ, deputies responded to a 911 call in Castroville, Texas, on Nov. 8 for reports of a “male subject with a knife acting erratically.”
When a deputy with the Medina County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene, police say Michael Duarte approached the deputy in a threatening manner. The MCSO says ”after multiple verbal commands were given for Duarte to get on the ground by the deputy, Duarte charged toward the deputy while yelling, ‘I’m going to kill you.’”
At that point, the deputy fired two shots, which struck Duarte. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. It is unclear what led to police being called to the scene in the first place.
Duarte was known on Instagram by his handle @foodwithbearhands. Duarte posted videos of himself making meals and sharing recipes with followers.
Duarte’s talent agency Alooma posted a tribute to him on Instagram, describing him as “a devoted husband to his wife Jessica, a loving father to his daughter, brother and a loyal friend to so many around the world.”
He is survived by his wife and daughter.
