Alice Kessler and Ellen Kessler passed away in their home near Munich, Germany, with the use of medical aid in dying, per Bild.

“They had chosen to end their lives together. They no longer wanted to live,” the outlet reported.

Germany determined that assisted suicide would be enshrined within the country’s constitution in 2019 under certain conditions, per Dignity in Dying, which “includes the freedom to seek and make use of assistance provided by a third party.”

The person must “act responsibly and of their own free will.”

They must be of legal age and have legal capacity. Assistors may not carry out the lethal act themselves, as that would be “active euthanasia,” which is prohibited, per Bild.

Last year, the twins told the outlet they wished to be buried one day “in the same urn, together with the ashes of their beloved mother Elsa and their dog Yello.”

“That’s what we stipulated in our wills,” Ellen said at the time.

The singers, dancers, and actresses were popular in Europe, and also made appearances on U.S. television, including The Red Skelton Hour and The Ed Sullivan Show. They also appeared in Sodom and Gomorrah as dancers and were featured on the cover of Life Magazine. They also posed in the Italian edition of Playboy at the age of 40 after moving to Italy, and later received awards from Germany and Italy for their work in showbiz over the decades.

Our thoughts are with The Kessler Twins‘ loved ones at this difficult time.
