Novelis aluminum plant catches fire again after costly disaster in September

Numerous emergency crews responded to a four-alarm fire at the Novelis aluminum plant in Scriba, N.Y., on Thursday around 8:45 a.m.

The Oswego County plant supplies 40% of the aluminum sheets used by automakers in the United States. Ford is the largest user of the facility.

“A fire started at Novelis’ Oswego, New York, plant this morning,” a Novelis Spokesperson told CNY Central in a statement. “Everyone working at the plant was safely evacuated. Multiple local fire departments responded, and the fire is now under control. Crews are still on site to ensure it is fully extinguished.”

The cause of the fire could not be immediately confirmed.

Heavy black plumes of smoke could be seen coming out of the roof of the plant. Dispatch audio from Broadcastify.com reported that the fire came from the plant’s cold mill.

This is the third fire reported at the plant in two months. The first, a large fire, broke out on Sept. 16. The fire on Thursday appears to have started in the same place where the Sept. 16 occurred. The second, smaller fire broke out on Oct. 10.

The Sept. 16 fire was predicted to be costly for Ford. The automaker’s third-quarter report indicated that it could lose around $1 billion in earnings due to the fire.

Ford CEO Jim Farley said it would create up to 1,000 jobs to increase production of its incredibly popular F-Series to make up for the losses. The F-Series is one of the largest employers of aluminum.
