What you need to know: With Sacred Heart playing as an FCS Independent over the last two seasons after leaving the Northeast Conference, the Pioneers’ playoff fate is entirely up to the selection committee ahead of Sunday’s bracket reveal. The Pioneers can secure a marquee win at the buzzer Saturday afternoon, however, heading on the road to face No. 7 Villanova. Sacred Heart has faced off against two teams currently ranked inside the top 10 so far this season, taking an early lead against Patriot League champions Lehigh in Week 2 before fading in the second half to lose 28-10. It was the opposite story when the Pioneers traveled west to face No. 2 Montana on Oct. 18, falling into a 22-0 first-quarter hole before rallying within one possession inside the final seven minutes. Mark Nofri’s squad will head to the Philadelphia area as 17.5-point underdogs but riding a three-game winning streak, most recently beating Merrimack in a 42-37 shootout. Quarterback Jack Synder led Sacred Heart in both passing and rushing yards during a dominant, old-school offensive performance, as the Pioneers racked up 424 total yards on the ground.
