Capitals complete clutch comeback over Maple Leafs: numbers for the morning after

📸 : RMNB
The Washington Capitals should not have been down 2-0 in Friday night’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and they eventually righted those wrongs. After scoring four unanswered goals, the Capitals came out 4-2 victors, claiming a big two points before heading out onto the road.
Great fight back through some adversity. It would have been tough to stomach a loss on home ice to a very bad Maple Leafs team.
- I really liked the first 40 minutes for the Capitals, but they were just burned by bad luck, bad refereeing, and good goaltending from the opposition. In the third, the first 12 or so minutes just weren’t good, and I think they had a tough time dealing with the Maple Leafs sitting back and just counter-attacking. They eventually figured things out, though, and after scoring the game-tying goal, took control of the rest of regulation. I don’t like seeing Toronto post seven five-on-five high-danger chances in that last frame, though.
- Jakob Chychrun, holy schmoley. He now has goals in five straight games and points in ten straight, the latter tying a franchise record for defensemen. During his streak, he has 13 points (7g, 6a) and is on pace for 75 points (33g, 42a) this season. Really great pass from Ryan Leonard to set Chychrun up for the game-winner.
- Really good to see Connor McMichael score in two straight and extend his point streak to three games. He was my most noticeable forward for the Capitals in this win, notching two points (1g, 1a), five shots on goal, nine shot attempts, seven individual scoring chances, and two individual high-danger chances. Look out, McMichael now has nine points (3g, 6a) in his last eight games.
The Capitals are 6-1-1 in their last eight games at Capital One Arena.

- I hated the first goal that Logan Thompson gave up, but he bounced back and was tremendous after that. At the end of regulation, he made 20 stops on 22 shots faced. According to MoneyPuck, he saved 0.9 more goals than expected, which is basically the inverse of the 0.97 more goals than expected that Joseph Woll allowed.
- Per the Capitals, the team has scored 31 goals in their last six games (5.17 GF/GP), including 24 at five-on-five. What a turnaround from how we were feeling just a few weeks ago.
- Really rough game for the fourth line. Hendrix Lapierre played just 5:39 of ice time in the win, and with him on the ice at five-on-five, the Capitals had negative differentials in shot attempts (-9), scoring chances (-6), and high-danger chances (-1).
