QUARTERBACK
Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars (Rostered in 26.8% of leagues on ESPN)
- League Size: 10
- Time Frame: Weeks 14, 15 and 17
Lawenrece completed 16 of 27 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns while running three times for 25 yards in a blowout win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 13. He was among the highest-scoring fantasy quarterbacks this week. While a few other quarterbacks available on the waiver wire had strong performances, Lawrence is the only one to do so with any consistency.
Lawrence has averaged 18.1 fantasy points per game over the past six weeks, ranking 14th among quarterbacks. The next closest quarterback available on the waiver wire who is still a starter is Bryce Young, at 13.6. Young also had a good week, but he has a bye in Week 14.
The gap between Lawrence and the rest of the waiver-wire quarterbacks is so large that his schedule doesn’t matter as much. The Jaguars face the Indianapolis Colts both this week and in the fantasy championship round. Indianapolis likely won’t have injured cornerback Sauce Gardner for the first game, and the Colts have allowed at least 23 points in six of their past seven games. Lawrence will likely be ranked higher than any other waiver quarterback this week — and potentially every other week during the fantasy playoffs, as well.
J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings (29.7%)
- League Size: 10, 12, 14
- Time Frame: Weeks 14-17
McCarthy hasn’t found much fantasy success this season, and he missed this past week with a concussion. His 51.1% accuracy rate is the lowest among quarterbacks with at least 100 attempts this season. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer completed 19 of 30 passes for 126 yards and four interceptions in McCarthy’s place in Week 13. While some thought Brosmer would remain the starter, that seems unlikely after his showing.
McCarthy is worth considering despite his play because he has the highest upside among waiver-wire quarterbacks over the next four weeks. He faces the Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Detroit Lions — the four teams that have allowed the most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season.
The most difficult opponent from that group is Detroit, whom McCarthy played in Week 6 and scored 19.9 fantasy points against. It would be risky to put McCarthy in your fantasy starting lineup during the most critical part of the fantasy season, but quarterbacks who face the Commanders, Cowboys, Giants and Lions tend to be fantasy starters.
