CBS reveals the fate of two spinoff series — see if ‘Boston Blue’ is returning

CBS has renewed two spinoff series.

The “Blue Bloods” offshoot, “Boston Blue,” and the “Fire Country” spinoff, “Sheriff Country,” are both getting a second season.

President of CBS Entertainment Amy Reisenbach celebrated the news in a Wednesday, Dec. 3, statement.

“Two new shows on Friday night have become instant hits with audiences quickly embracing Boston Blue and Sheriff Country across broadcast and streaming,” Reisenbach said. “These early renewals reflect the power of character-driven storytelling, compelling narratives and the exceptional talent on both sides of the camera that make these series truly stand out.”

According to a CBS press release, “Boston Blue” averages 8 million viewers, while “Sheriff Country” averages 7.6 million viewers. Both of the new series premiered on Oct. 17 and have “won every Friday night in total viewers” since then. The renewal announcements come after only six episodes of each show have aired.

Donnie Wahlberg stars in “Boston Blue” as Detective Danny Reagan, a role he previously played on all 14 seasons of “Blue Bloods.” He is the only alum from the original series who carried over to the main cast of “Boston Blue,” but Bridget Moynahan (Erin Reagan) and Marisa Ramirez (Maria Baez) have both made guest appearances.

Danny’s son, Sean, is also a main character on “Boston Blue,” but he was recast. Mika Amonsen plays Sean in the spinoff, while Andrew Terraciano originated the role in “Blue Bloods.”

Showrunner Brandon Margolis told TVLine in October that replacing Terraciano was a creative decision.

“First of all, we love Andrew’s work from the original series and loved watching him grow up on TV. But once we realized we were telling a very new chapter in this character’s life, creatively it made sense to find an actor with a different energy,” Margolis explained. “Mika’s performance calls back to Sean’s vulnerabilities, but he brings a youthful energy that takes the character in a new direction we loved.”

“Sheriff Country,” meanwhile, stars Morena Baccarin stars as Mickey Fox, the stepsister of Fire Country’s Sharon Leone (Diane Farr). Baccarin has made a handful of appearances as Mickey on “Fire Country,” while Farr guest starred on one episode of “Sheriff Country.”

“Sheriff Country” airs on CBS on Fridays at 8 p.m. ET, followed by “Fire Country” at 9 p.m. ET and “Boston Blue” at 10 p.m. ET. Past episodes of all three series are available to stream on Paramount+.
