Jamie Carragher’s past comments about Mohamed Salah’s approach to speaking to the media have resurfaced after the Liverpool forward admitted he expects the Anfield great to “go for me again” following his explosive interview over the weekend.

Salah stunned supporters when he hinted he could have played his final game for the club, claiming he has been “thrown under the bus” and suggesting a breakdown in his relationship with boss Arne Slot. The 33-year-old also said someone doesn’t want him at the club and expressed deep frustration at being benched for three successive matches.

His extraordinary outburst, delivered in the mixed zone at Elland Road after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United, immediately brought Carragher’s previous criticism back into focus. And fans are now eagerly awaiting the pundit’s response on Monday Night Football tonight as Wolves host Manchester United.

Back in November 2024, amid uncertainty over Salah’s contract situation, Carragher publicly questioned both the timing and motives behind a rare interview Salah gave after a win at Southampton.

Carragher said then that he was “very disappointed” with the forward, accusing him of choosing a moment of maximum visibility, after scoring the winner at St Mary’s, to discuss stalled contract negotiations.

“Of course there’s been discussions,” Carragher said at the time. “There has been a big difference in the valuation, what Mo Salah and his agent value him at…

“But I must say I am very disappointed in Mo Salah. That interview last night after the game, that’s come out today. Liverpool have got Real Madrid midweek and Manchester City at the weekend, that’s the story for Liverpool right now.”

Carragher pointed out that Salah had only stopped to speak in the mixed zone twice in seven years, yet had suddenly decided to do so on the back of scoring a decisive goal.

“He decided to stop for a third time, away at Southampton, on the back of winning Liverpool the game, and putting that out.”

Salah, for his part, had suggested Liverpool had not presented him with an offer to extend his deal, saying: “We are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers… I’m probably more out than in.”

Fast-forward to last weekend and Salah, having remained silent for most of Liverpool’s difficult spell this term, delivered the most incendiary interview of his Anfield career.

“I am top goalscorer, best player, winning the league in such a style, but I am the one who has to defend himself in front of the media and fans,” Salah told reporters whilst making his frustration clear at being benched for Liverpool’s previous three matches.

“After what I have done for the club it really hurts.

“You can imagine, really. After going from home to the club and you don’t know if you are starting.

“I know the club too well, I have been here many years. Tomorrow Carragher is going to go for me again and again and that’s fine.”

Salah kicked off the interview by expressing his anger at being left out against Leeds, before escalating to more damning comments, including claiming someone at the club is trying to push him out, he no longer maintains a relationship with Arne Slot and that his Liverpool tenure could be drawing to a close.

“[I couldn’t believe] that I’m sitting on the bench for 90 minutes!” Salah added.

“The third time on the bench, I think for the first time in my career. I’m very, very disappointed to be fair. I have done so much for this club down the years and especially last season.

“Now I’m sitting on the bench and I don’t know why. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.

“I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far I am in the bench for three games so I can’t say they keep the promise. I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager and all of a sudden, we don’t have any relationship.

“I don’t know why, but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.

“This club, I always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much I will always do. I called my mum yesterday – you guys didn’t know if I would start or not [against Leeds] – but I knew.

“Yesterday I said to them, come to the Brighton game. I don’t know if I am going to play or not but I am going to enjoy it. In my heads, I’m going to enjoy that game because I don’t know what is going to happen now.

“I will be in Anfield to say goodbye to the fans and go the Africa Cup of Nations. I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there.”

Those remarks were seen by many Liverpool supporters as confirmation that his time at the club is drawing to a close, despite signing a lucrative two-year extension earlier this year.

Carragher will be on Sky Sports duty for Wolves v Manchester United this evening, and there is already anticipation growing over how he will respond, particularly given his frustration with Salah’s interview tactics in the past.
