Eagles’ Jalen Hurts charged with interception, lost fumble on wild triple-turnover play

The well-documented offensive struggles this season for the Philadelphia Eagles reached a comical new low Monday night in the second quarter against the Los Angeles Chargers, when quarterback Jalen Hurts threw an interception and lost a fumble on the same play.
Philadelphia’s passing game showed signs of life for the first time early in the second quarter on a drive that started on its own 26-yard line. Hurts found tight end Dallas Goedert for 16 yards and followed it up with a 22-yard pass to A.J. Brown for the wide receiver’s first catch of the game. Two plays later, the Eagles faced third-and-1 at the Los Angeles 21-yard line.
As Hurts went back to throw out of an empty formation, the Chargers came at Hurts with a Cover 0 look. They had their four defensive linemen rush the quarterback and added a linebacker and defensive back blitzing. One of the defensive linemen, Da’Shawn Hand, dropped out of the rush and went into pass coverage in the middle of the field. Brown ran a short route coming across the middle, and Hurts never saw Hand drop into that space.
Hand intercepted Hurts and returned the ball to the 25-yard line. Eagles running back Will Shipley came from behind Hand and stripped the ball out, which was recovered by Hurts. Instead of going down and taking the fresh set of downs, Hurts tried to advance the ball but was immediately hit by Chargers defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell, who sent the ball rolling back farther. Chargers linebacker Troy Dye was finally able to fall on the ball to end the play and give possession to the Chargers.

The play was so wild the “Monsters, Inc.”-theme “Monsters Funday Football” broadcast glitched while showing it.
The Chargers converted the turnover into points by kicking a 45-yard field goal. On the ensuing Eagles possession, Hurts’ pass on the second play of the drive was intercepted by Chargers defensive back Donte Jackson, setting the Chargers up at the Philadelphia 30-yard line. On the very next play, Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean stripped Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, and the ball was recovered by Eagles defensive tackle Byron Young. Philadelphia converted that turnover into a field goal.
In total, there were five turnovers in a span of 11 plays, with just 3 points scored in that stretch. The first half included six turnovers total — Hurts threw another interception — as the Chargers led 10-6.
