Reading v Posh: Match Preview

Posh are back in Sky Bet League One action on Tuesday evening as Luke Williams’ side travel to the Select Car Leasing Stadium (8pm).
Peterborough United return to Sky Bet League One action on Tuesday night with a trip to Berkshire to face Leam Richardson’s Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium (8pm).
After back to back defeats in cup competitions, Luke Williams will be looking for a response from his side with points required to move away from danger at the bottom of the division.
Reading lie in 17th place in the table but were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup by non-league Carlisle United at the start of November. They enjoyed a fine 3-0 win at Blackpool in their last outing and were without a game at the weekend.
TEAM NEWS
Posh are without the services of Sam Hughes, Rio Adebisi, George Nevett and Cian Hayes, but the latter two are back on grass as they near a return to the first team squad. Jacob Mendy returned to Wrexham for treatment, but is now back at Posh and stepping up his return from a muscle injury.
Defender Tom O’Connor missed the weekend defeat with a slight calf issue and he will be assessed ahead of the trip to Reading with Williams commenting: “It is important that we don’t risk losing Tom for any longer than we would want, so if he misses one game and then is back in the fold, that is a lot better than pushing and losing him for 10 games.”
Reading welcome back the experienced Matt Ritchie from suspension while former Posh striker Jack Marriott is still sidelined with a hamstring injury.
ONE TO WATCH
Charlie Savage
A midfielder just like his dad, Robbie, Charlie is, a player full of potential, moved to the Royals ahead of the 2023/24 season from Premier League giants Manchester United.
He came through the Red Devils’ academy, working his way through the youth ranks before he penned his first pro deal at Old Trafford in April 2021, just before his 18th birthday. Before the calendar year was out, he made his senior debut for United as a late sub for Juan Mata in a Champions League group game against Swiss side Young Boys.
The Welshman’s development at United continued over the past two seasons with regular starts in PL2 – not to mention valuable experience against Football League players as part of United’s U21 squad in the Papa John’s Trophy. Savage then got his first regular spell of senior football in the second half of 2022/23, making 15 League One appearances for Forest Green Rovers. His first ever professional goal came at the New Lawn in March against near-neighbours Bristol Rovers, a strike which earned him FGR’s Goal of the Season award.
After the season’s conclusion, he made his competitive debut for the Wales Under 21 squad as he helped his nation to a valuable 2-2 draw in Denmark in their opening fixture of the 2025 U21 European Championship qualifiers. Ahead of the 2023/24 season, Charlie was handed the captain’s armband for the Red Devils in the second half of a friendly win against Leeds in Oslo, leading a youthful United side. However, just a week later, he set off on a new challenge, swapping the red of United for the blue and white hoops of the Royals.
The Select Car Leasing Stadium brings back happy memories for Savage, if not also a little bit awkward. The SCL was the site of his dad’s final professional appearance, which was honoured by a lap of honour in just a vest and his pants! Charlie was there that day, at the stadium he now calls home.
MANAGER QUOTES
“We were disappointed to go out of both cup competitions and it is important that we get back to winning ways in the league. It has been fine margins in a lot of our games so far, we need to get on the right side of those margins. We need to rotate the squad because it is important not to lose players to injury. We want to have a full squad to choose from,” Williams said.
