The Odyssey Six-Minute Prologue Hits Theaters at 70mm Imax Screenings

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” will begin its epic theatrical journey over the weekend.

Audiences will be treated to the nearly six-minute prologue of “The Odyssey” on Dec. 12 ahead of Imax 70mm screenings of “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another,” which are returning to the big screen for re-releases. The following weekend, a shorter (but still full-length) version of “The Odyssey” trailer will play ahead of all “Avatar: Fire and Ash” showings, which start on Dec. 19. Meanwhile the prologue will continue to run exclusively before Imax screenings of “Avatar 3.”

The extended trailer is debuting on Imax 70mm screens not only because it is Nolan’s preferred format, but also because “The Odyssey” will be the first movie shot entirely with Imax cameras. Nolan’s prior blockbuster, “Oppenheimer,” was particularly huge in Imax, with the premium format contributing a massive 20% of overall box office grosses. Some movie lovers even crossed state lines to see “Oppenheimer” in 70mm Imax, selling out those particularly large auditoriums for weeks.

This isn’t the first glimpse at “The Odyssey.” A minute-long teaser was unveiled over the summer ahead of “Jurassic World Rebirth” and “Superman” showings, stoking excitement a year before the film lands in theaters on July 17, 2026.

An adaptation of the Homer’s Greek epic, “The Odyssey” stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and chronicles his long and perilous return home after the Trojan War. Tom Holland portrays his son Telemachus while Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal round out the ensemble.

Given Nolan’s stature in Hollywood, Universal decided to put tickets on sale — only for select Imax 70mm screens — 12 months before the action-epic is slated to debut. For those who weren’t able to snag a seat a year in advance, regular ol’ tickets will go on sale much closer to the film’s release date.
