Prosecutors release bodycam footage of Luigi Mangione arrest

On Tuesday, Mr Mangione’s lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo questioned Patrolman Stephen Fox, one of several policemen who responded to the Mangione call at the McDonald’s on 9 December 2024.

Her questions were aimed at whether Mr Fox correctly read Mr Mangione his Miranda Rights – warnings US police must give suspects in custody about their right to an attorney and the right against self-incrimination.

Mr Fox also testified that he took part in searching Mr Mangione’s backpack at the McDonald’s, and that he was “right beside” the suspect during his arraignment, according to CBS News, the BBC’s US news partner.

According to CBS, Mr Fox testified that at the arraignment, Mangione looked back at the assembled reporters and stated, “All these people are here for a mass murderer, wild.”

Leaving the arraignment, Mr Fox testified that Mangione tripped. The officer said he told Mangione, “I forgot you were shacked.”

“It’s OK, I’m going to have to get used to it,” Mr Mangione said, according to Mr Fox’s testimony.

The parties have played numerous videos in court and showed other physical evidence, including a notebook belonging to Mr Mangione and some of his writings.

The stakes of the hearings are significant. Should Mr Mangione’s attorneys succeed in convincing Justice Gregory Carro that some of the evidence is inadmissible, it could restrict what prosecutors can show a jury during any eventual trial.
