Man convicted in Fox River hit-and-run boat crash files appeal, criticizes trial fairness

OSHKOSH, Wis. (WBAY) – The man convicted in a boat crash on the Fox River in Winnebago County is appealing his conviction.

A jury found Jason Lindemann guilty in June 2024, for two felony counts of reckless‑endangerment, as well as a dozen other misdemeanors after his speedboat clipped a party paddle boat on a July night in 2022.

Surveillance video caught the incident as it happened. Several people on the paddleboat suffered injuries.

Lindemann’s attorney filed his appeal brief this week, arguing the evidence to convict him was insufficient and that he simply accelerated as after clearing a no‑wake zone, and that didn’t make him guilty of a felony.

He also argued the jury got instructions that blurred “careless” with criminal recklessness.

“Lindemann drives his boat like he’s supposed to and then does what every boater does,” his appeal argued.

Lindemann was sentenced to five months in jail, as well as 3 years on probation and community service. There are several civil lawsuits still in progress against Lindemann.
