UVic named one of Canada’s top 20 research universities for 2024

The University of Victoria has been ranked as one of the top 20 research universities in Canada.

A recently released ranking by Research Infosource Inc. has UVic at the 18th spot for 2024, up two spots from 2023. The ranking list notes that the university has a sponsored research income of $168,000 in 2024, up 20.3 per cent from the previous year.

Sponsored research income includes all funds to support research received in the form of a grant, contract or contribution from all sources external to the institution.

UVic was also named the best university under the comprehensive rank for faculty research intensity, with $215,900 per faculty.

According to the data, in fiscal 2024, faculty research intensity – the research income per faculty position – was up overall 2.9 per cent from fiscal 2023.

According to Research Infosource Inc., in fiscal 2024, total government funding across Canada increased by three per cent to $6.21 billion, while total non-government funding grew more than double that (up 7.8 per cent to $3.85 billion). 

Overall, the University of Toronto was took the number one position, followed by the Université de Montréal and McGill University.

Within the province, the University of British Columbia placed fourth, down two spots from the previous year, followed by UVic at 18, Simon Fraser University at 19 (down one spot from last year) and the University of Northern British Columbia at the 39th spot.
