Paramount+ Successfully Revives the Greatest Crime Thriller of the ’90s on Streaming

Paramount+ is making one of its loudest December statements by bringing Joel Coen’s 1996 Fargo back into the spotlight starting December 1. The film remains a benchmark for character-driven tension, Coen Brothers’ absurdity, and small-town dread that modern crime dramas still imitate but rarely surpass.
The move isn’t exactly an out-of-the-blue long shot either, as the title still carries weight from Noah Hawley’s FX anthology TV series Fargo, which concluded most of its arcs with its fifth installment in 2024. Because the anthology series built a loyal fan base that’s still waiting for news of a possible continuation, Paramount+ is likely tapping into that momentum by bringing back the origin of it all.
Not to mention that the film is entering the platform at a moment when audiences are hungry for crime stories with structure, personality, and sharp writing, the polar opposite of many algorithm-driven thrillers that dominate current streaming queues. Fargo’s return also strengthens the service’s December portfolio, which is unusually stacked with prestige titles like Goodfellas, No Country for Old Men, and The Untouchables, positioning Paramount+ as an unexpected home for high-caliber crime cinema.
What Else is Coming to Paramount+ in December 2025
Instead of padding the month with mid-tier filler, Paramount+ is stacking its catalog with films that still dominate cultural conversations decades after release. Movies like GoodFellas, Braveheart, The Untouchables, and Pulp Fiction are among the evergreen titles that viewers continue to seek out, rewatch, quote, debate, and regard as genre-defining benchmarks.
The December slate also creates a genre-rich ecosystem that encourages long viewing streaks. Crime classics sit alongside holiday staples (Miracle on 34th Street, Ernest Saves Christmas), big-budget sci-fi (Interstellar, Annihilation), and crowd-pleasing comedies (A Night at the Roxbury, She’s the Man). With nearly all additions scheduled for December 1st, the platform is front-loading the month to maximize holiday engagement. Some of the other most notable titles include, but aren’t limited to, Inglourious Basterds, Forrest Gump, Ocean’s Eleven, The Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island, and The Hateful Eight.
Fargo will be available to stream on Paramount+ starting December 1. Hawley’s Fargo anthology TV show can be watched on Hulu. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
