Section of Hannegan Road south of Lynden closed due to flooding

UPDATE: Hannegan Road reopened Dec. 9 around 6 p.m. after the water level receded. The original story is below.

Hannegan Road is closed due to water spilling over the roadway from Lynden city limits to Polinder Road, according to Gina Miller with Whatcom County Public Works.

The road closure was first announced at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9. The flooding was first discovered around 7:30 a.m., and the road was closed when the water became too deep for vehicles, according to Miller. Detours for vehicles have been set up, with signs directing traffic.

Kamm Creek overflowed its banks due to heavy rainfall over the last few days. It is not uncommon for the road to flood in the area, as the soil can only hold so much water before flooding occurs, Miller said.

No efficient methods for removing large amounts of water from the roadway exist, so it is unknown how long the road will be flooded.
