Every game called off this weekend as FA Cup third round, League One and League Two clashes postponed

FA Cup third round fixtures are under threat with adverse weather conditions, ensuring teams are left to work hard to provide a playing surface that is deemed to be safe

Weather is once again expected to wreak havoc with the football calendar as the fallout from Storm Goretti sees teams scrambling to keep their fixtures from being cancelled. The storm has terrorised the nation with sub-zero temperatures and a flurry of snow and ice warnings.

Train services have seen disruption, schools have closed, and tens of thousands are facing widespread power cuts. A rare red warning was issued by the Met Office on Friday for “dangerous, stormy” winds in one part of the county and Britons are seeing travel chaos with transport hit by the extreme winds and heavy snow.

The FA Cup’s third round is scheduled to get underway this weekend, but has already seen its first postponement. Salford City confirmed that they have taken early action to delay their clash with Swindon Town.

“Salford City’s Emirates FA Cup Third Round fixture against Swindon Town on Saturday has been postponed due to a frozen pitch,” read a statement.

“Sheets have remained on the pitch over the last couple of weeks in anticipation of the forecasted sub-zero temperatures, and heat lamps have been moved around the pitch throughout the week to try and help thaw the pitch out.

“However, despite the best efforts of the ground staff, there are still parts of the pitch that are frozen, and the decision has been made early in conjunction with the FA and Swindon to prevent unnecessary disruption to travelling supporters.”

There are a handful of League Two games in action as well, but there have already been postponements for a few teams already. The likes of Chesterfield, Oldham Athletic, and Accrington Stanley have all called off their respective league fixtures, due to the weather.

All 64 clubs still in the FA Cup will receive guaranteed payments from the competition’s prize fund for winning or losing their tie. Those involved in television broadcasts will earn an additional £80,000 on linear channels, and the fee for clubs participating in the matches streamed on discovery+ is £40,000.

The FA Trophy has also seen a tie fall victim to the weather, with Kidderminster Harriers’ clash with Morecambe postponed and rescheduled for Tuesday, January 13. A match official made the decision following a pitch inspection at Aggborough Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Significant rain, snowfall and ice left the surface waterlogged. With a further drop in temperatures, there was said to be ‘no prospect of the pitch being playable’ on Saturday.
