Will Panthers avenge previous loss to Saints? Predictions, best bets, TV channel

The Carolina Panthers will get an opportunity for revenge in Week 15 in an enormous NFC South game.

Coming off a bye week and looking to curb a longstanding playoff drought, head coach Dave Canales and his crew can get retribution for their Week 10 home loss to the New Orleans Saints (3-10) on the road Sunday at the Caesars Superdome (4:25 p.m. on FOX).

The Panthers (7-6) were able to get a week of rest after upsetting the NFC favorite Los Angeles Rams at home in Week 13. Cornerback Jaycee Horn (concussion), center Cade Mays (ankle) and linebacker Christian Rozeboom (hip/hamstring) were sidelined for the upset win, but all three starters are expected to be back for this rematch.

Quarterback Bryce Young has had plenty of peaks and valleys this season, but his three-TD effort against the Rams in a 31-28 win highlighted his clutch nature in big spots. Running back Chuba Hubbard, who has been slowed down by a calf injury for most of the season, finally looks like himself after posting 83 rushing yards in the win over Los Angeles.

Carolina is hoping that Young, Hubbard, Horn and the rest of the bunch can put their previous struggles against the Saints in the rearview mirror. They are already a half-game in front of Tampa Bay (7-7) due to the Buccaneers’ last-second loss to Atlanta Thursday night. If the Panthers win, they will be a full game up and could clinch the NFC South and a playoff spot by beating Tampa Bay at home Dec. 21. If the Panthers lose, they will fall back into a tie with Tampa Bay.

The Saints are in the middle of a rebuilding season. At 3-10, they’re among the league’s bottom-feeders in the standings.

However, one of first-year head coach Kellen Moore’s trio of wins on the season did come against Carolina on the road. Moore and the Saints then also upset the Buccaneers on the road last week. This is a dangerous team.

Rookie quarterback Tyler Shough has been up and down since his midseason debut, but he lit up the Panthers for 282 passing yards in the first meeting. The aging Saints defense, though, hasn’t done enough to make up for the inexperience on offense. Still, they’ve collectively been competitive against their division rivals during the second half of the season.

The Saints have won four of their previous five matchups against the Panthers, dating back to the start of the 2023 season. Carolina hasn’t won in New Orleans since the 2022 season finale, which was a 10-7 slog in favor of the Panthers.

With the NFC South lead on the line, will the Panthers step up and keep their momentum going into the final four games of the campaign?

So who will win?

Below is a one-stop shop for everything you should know about the Panthers’ Week 15 game. That includes game predictions from Observer reporters Mike Kaye and Alex Zietlow, as well as columnist Scott Fowler.

Carolina is now 8-5 against the spread this season. The Saints are 5-8 against the spread.

Here are some additional bets that you might find intriguing:

  • Chuba Hubbard with 40+ rushing yards (-117). Hubbard has started to look like himself over the past month. With the Panthers leaning heavily on the hotter hand in the backfield, it’s not a bad bet to count on the NFL’s all-time Canadian-born rusher.

  • Juwan Johnson with 40+ receiving yards (-108). The Panthers have typically struggled against opposing tight ends, and Johnson, in particular, has gashed Ejiro Evero’s unit over the past three years. Johnson has caught 12 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns in his five previous games against Carolina.

  • Jalen Coker with 50+ receiving yards (+194). Coker is starting to heat up as the Panthers have tried to spread the ball around a bit more in recent weeks. Coker has eclipsed 50 receiving yards in two of the past three games. He’s averaging 52.7 receiving yards per game during that span.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young throws a pass against the New Orleans Saints in the teams’ first meeting this season. Young could lead the offense to only 175 total yards, the second-lowest total in the Dave Canales era.

The Observer’s predictions: Will Panthers avenge their Week 10 home loss?

Scott Fowler (8-5) is running away with our week-to-week predictions pool, even with his latest result being a loss for the upset of the Rams before the bye week. Mike Kaye (4-9) and Alex Zietlow (3-10) should consider investing in an old magic 8 ball or something. Alas, everyone is still here to pick games.

Fowler: Panthers 17, Saints 16. There won’t be any running away with this one. That Saints team I saw Sunday beating on the Buccaneers looked like one way better than the 3-10 record. The Panthers are as healthy as they’ve been all year, though, and have so much to play for on this one that I foresee a close win. Bonus prediction: Jalen Coker scores a TD.

Kaye: Panthers 20, Saints 17. New Orleans has made the rest of the NFC South feel uneasy down the stretch. After upsetting Carolina in Week 10, the Saints bested the Bucs in Week 14 on the road. That said, the Panthers are more talented and should want this game more, especially with what’s on the line over the next four weeks. This feels like a game that will come down to Bryce Young’s patented crunch-time heroics.

Zietlow: Panthers 24, Saints 14. The Saints and their fearless rookie quarterback have now caught two divisional foes by surprise. But with so much on the line for the Panthers now — and with Carolina getting arguably its second-most valuable defensive player back in safety Tre’Von Moehrig back this week — I don’t think the Panthers get surprised again. Dave Canales and Bryce Young will exit New Orleans still atop the NFC South.
