A warning has been issued for UK households who do NOT have smart meters. British Gas, EDF, EON, Ovo and Octopus customers are being urged to make one phone call and cut £176 off their energy bill.
You could save nearly £200 off your bill with this simple step, experts reckon. Billpayers could save nearly £200 by installing a smart meter.
They are installed at no extra cost by your supplier, and people who use them have said it saves them £176 on average, according to Smart Energy GB.

Most people surveyed who have them installed (57%) say that they believe they are better off with it. A third of households now use smart meters, and 39% of those who do say they feel more in control of their house bills as a result.
They also enable users to maximise their benefits from energy reward schemes, which incentivise and reward customers for using energy at off-peak times.
Danni Barnes, Director of Development and Partnerships at National Energy Action, said: “Smart meters allow you to better track energy usage, ensure accurate billing and, with more smart tariffs entering the market, you may be able to switch to a smart tariff that can save you money.
“If you are struggling with your energy bills, reach out to your supplier for support.”
Ahead of Christmas, energy suppliers are installing the next generation of gas and electricity meters, called smart meters, with tow thirds of British homes now connected to the smart meter network.
The Labour Party government’s ambition is for everyone in England, Scotland and Wales to be offered them at no upfront cost in the next few years.
About 35 million have been installed so far, but the date to complete the roll-out has been pushed back to the end of 2025.
Most suppliers are installing nationwide now, but how quickly you can get them will depend on availability in your area.
