Colorado authorities say 2 missing 13-year-old girls have been found

In Elbert County, authorities said the two missing 13-year-old girls had been found on Tuesday morning. They had been missing since Monday evening when they were last seen leaving a school with backpacks. According to investigators, the Elbert School canceled classes for Tuesday as a result of the search.

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office told CBS Colorado that after the two girls were reported missing, deputies conducted a search within a five-mile radius of the school, which is located in the Elbert County School District 200. That search was called off around 11:30 p.m. to midnight Monday.
According to the sheriff’s office, the search included drones and canines from the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office and Douglas County Search and Rescue, people on ATVs and on foot. Investigators had said the search will “ramp up operations in the morning,” and Arapahoe Rescue Patrol was added to the search resources.

According to investigators, the girls attend the Colorado Springs School and they were visiting the Elbert School for a basketball game. The girls were located after being out all night and were being fed at a rancher’s home on Elbert County Road 5, several miles west of the school, around 9 a.m. Tuesday.
“The good news is they are safe,” said Elbert County Undersheriff Dave Fisher. “They were not dressed for the weather.”
Fisher said the girls are cross-country runners and are both on the cross-country team at school. He also said they did not have their cell phones with them.
Fisher said they didn’t know the person who lives in the home, “Just a random house that they approached.”
