Sherrone Moore scandal a ‘tragedy’

Former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday he has been in contact via text message with Sherrone Moore, the former UM head coach fired last week for having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Harbaugh was head coach of his alma mater for nine years before leaving in January 2024 for the National Football League’s Los Angeles Chargers. Moore, who joined Harbaugh’s staff in 2018 from Central Michigan as tight ends coach, was elevated to co-offensive coordinator in 2021, then became offensive coordinator in 2023 when Michigan went undefeated and won the national championship. Moore was acting head coach for four games in 2023 while Harbaugh was suspended.

In an appearance Tuesday on The Dan Patrick Show, Harbaugh said he and Moore last spoke in early December.

“But I have texted him,” Harbaugh said.

Patrick asked about Moore, 39, who after being fired was arrested later that day. Last Friday, Moore was charged with third-degree felony home invasion and misdemeanor stalking and breaking and entering after he was arrested in Pittsfield Township at the apartment of the staffer.

“It’s a tragedy, the worst days of his life,” Harbaugh told Patrick. “Keep it together and take care of your family, that’s the message, and getting spiritual guidance is really critical.”

Harbaugh said he is not helping Michigan with its coaching search because he is focused on the Chargers’ game at the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

He said he is still processing what happened with Moore.

“I really still don’t have my head wrapped around it,” Harbaugh said. “It’s a tragedy and praying for all concerned. I love my alma mater, I love Michigan, but I love the Chargers, too, and I’d be doing disservice if I wasn’t putting all my focus on this game.”

Harbaugh fully endorsed the hiring of Moore in 2024. In an interview Jan. 25, 2024, with The Detroit News, Harbaugh made clear what he felt about elevating Moore to head coach.

“Not a better man to coach the team than Sherrone Moore,” Harbaugh said at the time. “He has my vote, my support wholeheartedly. I feel like it’s in great hands.”
