Highway 2 will be closed “for months” due to storm damage

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson announced that a 49-mile stretch of Highway 2 between Skykomish and Leavenworth will be closed for several months due to significant damage after historic weather and flooding damage.
During a Tuesday briefing, Ferguson highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that landslides continue to affect the area.

“It’s premature to guess exactly how to estimate exactly how long that will be, but that is obviously a major highway. We understand the patience of businesses and individuals, and human lives, about not having that highway available for an extended period of time. We’re going to do everything we possibly can to repair it as quickly as possible, but it is literally underwater in stages. There are major, major issues on that roadway,” he said.
The closure of Highway 2 poses major financial challenges for the Stevens Pass ski resort and the town of Leavenworth, both of which heavily rely on tourism during the holiday season.
In addition to Highway 2, several other highways, including I-90, US 12, and 410, have also suffered significant damage.
