Fabian Schar is one of only a handful of Newcastle players who were signed before the Saudi takeover in 2020 who remain at the club.
The Swiss defender has been at the club since 2018 and has seen it all, from relegation battles under Steve Bruce to winning the club’s first major trophy in 70 years at Wembley.
That kind of longevity often resonates with fans, and that is no different for the Swiss defender, who is adored by Geordies, particularly those who go to St. James’ Park week in, week out.
Below, we run through the Fabian Schar chant and reveal the lyrics, tune and story behind it.
Fabian Schar chant, lyrics and tune
The Fabian Schar chant is sung to the tune of ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’ by the Buggles. The lyrics are as follows:
Everyone needs a Fabian Schar,
Everyone needs a Fabian Schar,
Kick it short or kick it far,
His defensive skills are wunderbar,
Oh, oh oh oh ohh Fabian Schar,
Fabian Schar chant background
Unlike a lot of players in modern football, Fabian Schar had to wait his turn for a Newcastle chant, but there was an acceptance among Newcastle fans that the Swiss defender was overdue one.
The chant was first created on social media by ‘Wor Flags’, the fan group responsible for creating the displays we so often see at St James’ Park. It has gone on to become popular among away fans, but it still hasn’t taken off to the point where it is regularly sung by the Newcastle faithful.
In terms of the lyrics, the term ‘wunderbar’ is a direct German translation of the word ‘wonderful’. This is because Schar is from a part of Switzerland where German is the primary language. This is a nice nod to the player’s heritage, which we so often see in football chants.

FGG says: Plenty of potential
As far as I’m aware, there are no other football chants in circulation sung to this tune, which instantly means Newcastle fans deserve credit, as the easy way out would have been to simply copy another club with a generic tune. The song has plenty of potential, and perhaps it just needs Schar to pop up with a big goal for it to take off in a bigger way.
