Legacy of Monsters’ Prequel Set at Apple

Apple TV is expanding Legendary’s “Monsterverse “universe with a new prequel series centering on Wyatt Russell‘s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters character Colonel Lee Shaw, following his early years. Russell’s father, the legendary film and TV actor Kurt Russell, plays the character in his later years on the original series.
Joby Harold (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Obi-Wan Kenobi) will showrun the untitled new series through his banner, Safehouse Pictures, under his new overall deal with Legendary, as well as oversee Legendary’s entire “Monsterverse” franchise for Apple TV, featuring both new and fan-favorite Titans.
The new spinoff series will follow the story of Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who in 1984 went on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War.
“I could not feel more privileged to be a part of building out this wildly iconic universe,” Harold shared. “Apple and Legendary have been exemplary partners throughout this process, and we will continue to bring these Titans of cinematic history to audiences with the reverence they deserve.”
Season 1 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is available to stream in its entirety on Apple TV. The show’s sophomore season will premiere on February 27.
The prequel is executive produced by Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, alongside Wyatt Russell, Chris Black, Kyle Bradstreet, Alex Boden, Max Borenstein, Andy Goddard, and produced by Kei Banno, Brian Rogers, and Kenji Okuhira. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character. Toho licensed the rights to Legendary for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Harold’s first foray into TV was writing and executive producing Obi-Wan Kenobi, which was nominated for 5 Emmys, and broke records for the service on its premiere. His work history has been as a writer and producer of large tentpoles and franchises, including Edge of Tomorrow, the “John Wick” franchise, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and The Flash.
