Central California forecasted for heavy rain, flooding and snow during Christmas week

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Two storm systems along an atmospheric river will arrive in California during Christmas week, bringing heavy rainfall, snow and the possibility of flash flooding.

The entire state, including the Central Valley, will be impacted during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.

Storms have already started to hit Northern California, resulting in one death in Redding and thousands of power outages.

A Flood Watch will be in effect for the Valley starting at 4 pm Tuesday and lasting until 4 pm Friday. It will extend into the Foothill and mountain communities.

Rainfall is expected to start on Tuesday evening. The heaviest period is expected on Wednesday morning, which is Christmas Eve, with another round on Thursday, which is Christmas Day.

Extra caution should be taken on the roads when traveling. Over 30 MPH winds are expected for busy highways such as the Grapevine and Tehachapi Pass.

The Central Valley should expect intermittent showers accompanied by rounds of heavy rain until Friday. It will start to taper off on Saturday.

Resources are available across the Valley for those who need them. A full list of sandbags can be found here.
