Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Southeastern Michigan due to forecasted Freezing Rain

4Warn Weather – We’re starting our Christmas Day with some clouds, a little bit of sunshine, and cold temperatures as well, but we’re looking ahead to what will move into the region as we work into the day after Christmas on Friday, which will impact your travel plans for the extended holiday weekend.
Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Friday
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all of Southeastern Michigan, including Metro Detroit, from 5:00 AM Friday until 4:00 PM Friday, in advance of the freezing rain and ice accumulation forecast to move into the region.
The 4Warn Weather Team declared a 4Warn Weather Alert for Friday Morning into Friday Afternoon on Christmas Eve, with this freezing rain in the forecast, and 4Warn Meteorologist Bryan Schuerman says the forecast remains on track as of Christmas Morning.
What to Expect Thursday Night & Friday
Expect the clouds to increase Thursday night and early on Friday morning in advance of our next round of winter weather moving into the region, and this one looks to be more ice than anything else.
An area of low pressure work south of the region working throughout the day on Friday, with a warm front lifting north toward the region, and precipitation moving in with that frontal boundary, we will be on the north side of that frontal boundary, which means this event will be primarily freezing rain due to temperatures being very close to that freezing mark into the lower 30s.
As of right now, most of the region is looking at 0.05″ to 0.10″ of ice accumulation through early Friday afternoon, and this will be enough to make the roads slick and icy for the first part of the day on Friday. Due to the forecast of freezing rain with ice accumulation on Friday, we have declared a 4Warn Weather Alert for Friday morning into early Friday afternoon.
Once the system moves off to the east by Friday afternoon and early Friday evening, we will keep the cloud cover in the forecast Friday night and into the start of the weekend on Saturday. High temperature is dropping right around the freezing Mark Friday night, then warming back into the low 40s for the start of the weekend on Saturday.
Stay with the 4Warn Weather Team for more updates leading into Friday Morning. 4Warn Meteorologist Bryan Schuerman will have an updated forecast on Local 4 News at 6:00 and 11:00 PM on Christmas Evening.
