The blast happened Tuesday afternoon in the kitchen and cafeteria area of the Bristol Health and Rehab Center, formerly known as Silver Lake Nursing Home, on the 900 block of Tower Road.
PECO said crews were called to the facility a few hours earlier after reports of a gas odor. The explosion occurred while crews were on the scene. PECO said it is not yet known whether its equipment or natural gas was involved.
Two women were killed, including Muthoni Nduthu, a 52-year-old employee and Bristol resident. Nduthu was the mother of three children, ages 18 to 30. A nursing home resident was also killed, but her name has not been released.
Twenty people were injured and taken to various hospitals after the blast.
The 174-bed nursing home was purchased by Saber Healthcare Group just weeks ago.
