ROCHESTER, N.Y. — American Airlines has lifted its nationwide ground stop that led to six departures being delayed and 13 arrivals being delayed or canceled at the Rochester airport.
The airline decided to halt flights on Tuesday evening because of a “systemwide IT outage” and resumed flights after the system came back online. Planes already in the air weren’t impacted. The ground stop had a ripple effect for travelers at the Rochester airport. Travelers who News10NBC spoke with said it was busy past security as people scrambled to find another way to get to their destinations or find somewhere to sleep.
Some were waiting for hours for their loved ones’ flights to arrive, while others said they’re now having to delay their travel plans for days due to the outage.
“Her plane was supposed to land at 6:15. They delayed it three different times,” said Bonnie, who was picking up her daughter. “And then when we got here, we got here thinking it was going to be here at 7:20, and then found out that it was going to be 7:55.”
“They tried to put me on another flight, delayed to go out an hour after I was supposed to depart at 8 p.m., and then that basically missed my connection,” traveler Jacquline Ebner said. “So the best I could do is get rebooked on another airline for tomorrow evening.”
According to FlightAware, American Airlines had more than 1,300 delays and 300 cancellations. There’s no word yet on what caused the outages.
