Dangerous drive across the region as winter blizzard continues

The wall of winter continues to slam its way into Waterloo Region, pushing through its latest blizzard as 2025 gets set to come to a close.
Yesterday, the region saw around 5 centimetres of snowfall throughout the course of the day, leading to dangerous conditions across the board.
According to the Region of Waterloo’s Paramedics Service, they’ve already had to respond to a number of collision-related calls, urging the residents to stay home if they can this week.
While yesterday’s conditions saw a hazardous drive, today’s forecast shows no signs of improvement, with a Yellow Warning for Snow Squalls still in effect, calling for another 5-10 cm of snow to fall before the end of the day.
That’s not all, as Environment Canada said the region can expect another 5 cm for New Year’s Eve and a chance of snow squalls for New Year’s Day as well.
That trend is looking to stay consistent through the remainder of the week as well, with a chance of flurries pushing through into Saturday, followed by a brief reprieve on Sunday, before continuing into the workweek.
Alongside the ongoing and still expected snowfall, snow events have been declared throughout the region, including for Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, Wellesley Township, Wilmot Township, as well as a Significant Weather Event for Woolwich Township.
It means that on-street parking is banned throughout much of Waterloo Region for the next 24 hours, with hazardous driving conditions expected to push into Wednesday.
All-in-all, throughout the course of this winter blizzard, it’s recommended to stay home if possible.
If it’s important to head out, a few key reminders include:
- Slowing down on the drive, avoid speeding
- Keep an emergency kit inside vehicles
- Clearing off vehicles entirely of snow and ice
- Making sure windshield washer fluid is filled
- If in a collision, remain inside the vehicle to avoid further issues, turning on hazard lights
