EastEnders’ Jacqueline Jossa reveals why filming “timeless” flashforward episode was surprisingly easy

EastEnders spoilers follow.
EastEnders star Jacqueline Jossa has teased details about the upcoming flashforward episode which will take place over the New Year, with the actor calling the highly-anticipated instalment “timeless”.
The special episode, which will air on Thursday 1 January, will centre on the recently-returned Max Branning, with the action jumping forward a year and setting up several storylines which will develop over the course of the next 12 months.
While specific plot details have been kept under wraps, Jossa, who portrays Max’s daughter Lauren, shared that the process for filming a flashforward episode was initially a tad strange due to its secretive nature.
“Obviously, only the people in [the episode] got the whole script, because it’s all hush hush,” she shared. “There’s so many questions and no answers – we get the answers as we go, but every time now I get a script, I’m looking for the answers!
“But filming it, because it’s [writer] Simon Ashdown, and he knows the Brannings so well, it’s sort of timeless. Although it is a year on, these are still the Brannings. It’s still in there. You can feel it in your bones.

“You know what you’re saying, and the relationships between them – the love and hate that they have. We’ve known it for 20 years, so playing it actually wasn’t as hard as the confusion I had when I was reading it.”
“When we were actually playing it and it was on its feet, I was like, ‘oh I kind of get it, I understand it’, even though we have no idea what’s going on. It’s really a weird thing,” added the star, who first played Lauren in 2010.
Despite some initial confusion, it was eventually a normal day at the office for Jossa, who explained that the comfort she has on set with her co-stars makes for a pleasant collaborative experience.

“It’s really easy when you’re working with people who you’ve worked with for so long, and who you really care about and love. You’re playing the character that you’ve [always] been.
“You can just play the truth in the words and the rest will all make sense in the end – you just have to trust the team. It’s actually really fun. It’s a new way of working that actually takes the edge off a little bit.”
EastEnders airs on Mondays-Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
