Garden State Plaza security told Paramus police that the suspect fled the area in a 2021 Hyundai Elantra. Police said security footage confirmed that a person was at the mall displaying a gun.

Police arrested the 19-year-old Newark man and charged him with second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. He was taken to the Bergen County jail pending a court appearance.

The gun arrest in Paramus came on the heels of a shot being fired in Willowbrook Mall in Wayne on Dec. 30. There is no current threat to the public, said the Wayne Police Department.
