A Newark teenager was arrested on charges of brandishing a gun at Westfield Garden State Plaza on Dec. 30. The incident happened hours after a shot was fired at Willowbrook Mall.
At around 9:30 p.m., a person who was deemed suspicious by mall security was reported with a firearm, officials said.
Garden State Plaza security told Paramus police that the suspect fled the area in a 2021 Hyundai Elantra. Police said security footage confirmed that a person was at the mall displaying a gun.
The next morning at around 6:45 a.m., police found the vehicle of the presumed suspect. Officials said the person matched the description from mall security.
Police arrested the 19-year-old Newark man and charged him with second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. He was taken to the Bergen County jail pending a court appearance.
The gun arrest in Paramus came on the heels of a shot being fired in Willowbrook Mall in Wayne on Dec. 30. Police confirmed that a gun was fired at around 7 p.m. but said no one was hit with the bullet. Two adults and one juvenile are in custody. There is no current threat to the public, said the Wayne Police Department.
