Road remains closed after burst water pipe causes sinkhole | ITV News

A gaping hole was visible on a Leicester road after workers had to fix a burst water pipe and sinkhole.

The sinkhole appeared on Monday morning (29 December) as water was seen gushing from a pipe in Victoria Road East, at the crossroads with Gipsy Lane, in Humberstone.

Emergency services were at the scene for more than 24 hours as repairs took place.

Workers appear to have had to dig up a larger portion of the road, but Severn Trent said the pipe has now been fixed.

The crossroads remained closed on Wednesday, as disruption continued for residents and nearby businesses.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “We’re continuing to make repairs on Victoria Road East following a burst water pipe.

“While the pipe has now been fixed, the complexity of the road repair means we won’t be able to reopen the road fully until at least next week.

“We appreciate the disruption this will cause and thank everyone for their patience while we work as quickly as we can.

“We will be looking to partially reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so, but until then, and to keep the public and our workers safe, we urge everyone to follow the diversion route provided and not drive through any road closures.”
