Taylor Sheridan’s Brutally Violent Action Thriller Sequel Returns To Free Streaming

One of Taylor Sheridan‘s most underrated films is set to return to free streaming starting in 2026. Seven years ago, Denis Villenueves’s Oscar-nominated thriller Sicario received a sequel, and while critics were not as impressed the second time around, audiences still can’t get enough of the explosive action film. Now, it’s time to bring in the New Year with one of Sheridan’s most brutal titles in his extensive filmography.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado is now available to stream for free on Tubi as of January 1, 2026. Released in 2018, the action thriller sees Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin reprise their roles as Alejandro Gillick and Matt Graver, respectively. A relatively loose follow-up to the 2015 original, Day of the Soldado tells a new chapter in the drug war with a focus on human trafficking at the U.S.-Mexico border. With the U.S. government keen on escalating the war between cartels, it is once again up to Alejandro to get his hands dirty, no matter the cost. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, garnering a 62% from Rotten Tomatoes.
The film stars Benicio del Toro (One Battle After Another), Josh Brolin (The Running Man), Isabela Merced (Superman), Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Catherine Keener (Get Out), Shea Whigham (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning), David Castañeda (The Umbrella Academy), Raoul Trujillo (Blue Beetle), and Elijah Rodriguez (The Book of Life). Sicario: Day of the Soldado was directed by Stefano Sollima based on a script from Sheridan. Read the official synopsis:
In Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the series begins a new chapter. In the drug war, there are no rules – and as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) calls on the mysterious Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), whose family was murdered by a cartel kingpin, to escalate the war in nefarious ways. Alejandro kidnaps the kingpin’s daughter to inflame the conflict – but when the girl is seen as collateral damage, her fate will come between the two men as they question everything they are fighting for

As of this writing, a third Sicario film has not been officially announced. However, it seems like the sequel has been in the works behind the scenes for the past few years. In an interview earlier this year to promote Weapons, Josh Brolin confirmed that he had recently been told that the Sicario sequel was “very, very real.” No further information was revealed, but this was not the project made headlines.
Brolin’s quote came two years after producers Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill told Collider that the script was nearly complete back in 2023. In fact, it was their plan to bring back the original main cast, including Emily Blunt, who did not appear in Day of the Soldado. It is unclear if that is still the case, but it is safe to say that Taylor Sheridan likely remains involved in the writing process.
“The strike slowed us down a little bit, but we’re pretty close to being able to pull the trigger on that and really start lining up dates. We’re super proud of it. Working with Taylor [Sheridan, who wrote previous two movies], we always sort of envisioned this, at least sort of at a minimum, a three-part thing. But yeah, our idea is to get the cast back together with Benicio [Del Toro], Emily [Blunt], and Josh [Brolin], and we’ve got a great story to tell.”
