Tourism Grows 5.8% in 2025 / Víctor Borja Named Head of COFEPRIS

Tourism Grows 5.8%. Minister of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez presented positive performance for the tourism sector in 2025, highlighting sustained growth in visitor numbers, investment, and employment. She reported that between January and October, Mexico received 38.4 million international tourists, a 5.8% increase compared to 2024, while domestic tourism rose by 3.3% to reach 92.6 million travelers.

Rodríguez detailed that the United States remains the primary source market, accounting for 67.3% of visitors, followed by significant growth from Canada with 11.4%, Italy with 14.8%, China with 10.6%, and Korea with 11%. She emphasized that this growth is not limited to beach destinations but is also driven by cultural and recreational experiences across various states.

Pharmacies for Well-Being Expansion. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the Farmacias del Bienestar (Pharmacies for Well-Being) program will be operational in all 32 states by March 2026, following the completion of an evaluation phase currently underway in the State of Mexico. The initiative aims to guarantee free access to medications in health centers and hospitals while strengthening the Salud Casa por Casa (Health Home by Home) care scheme.

President Sheinbaum explained that the pilot in the State of Mexico allows the government to analyze operational efficiency before the national rollout. She confirmed that authorities are exploring different models to adapt the pharmacies to the specific needs and sizes of health centers across the country.

Víctor Hugo Borja Appointed Head of COFEPRIS. President Sheinbaum confirmed the appointment of Víctor Hugo Borja as the new head of the Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS). She noted that the decision was made by the Minister of Health, David Kershenobich, and underscored the agency’s role in approving medications and food supplies.

Sheinbaum recalled the anti-corruption overhaul conducted during the López Obrador administration, which significantly improved internal processes. She emphasized that the current focus is on implementing mechanisms to reduce approval times, ensuring the institution operates efficiently to support national development.
