We’re already a few days into the new year, and James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash is still holding the top spot at the box office, even with all the new Christmas releases. The people want to see Varang’s fierce roars! Three weeks after Avatar premiered, the fiery movie is estimated to gross around $36 million at the box office this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $300 million, per Deadline and Variety; even with a domestic decline of 38%, Fire and Ash still beat out Zootopia 2, Marty Supreme, and The Housemaid for the top spot for the New Years weekend. The movie is nearing $1 billion worldwide and can probably hit that milestone by next week, as it’s only $50,000 away.

Despite being in theaters for twice the amount of time that Avatar has, Zootopia 2 is behind them this weekend, beating out a newer family animation release, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, which came out on Christmas. The Disney sequel is estimated to earn $18 million this weekend, adding to its already $1 billion worldwide box office; SpongeBob is earning closer to $7.7 million in the new year. But for right now, the start of the year belongs to the Na’vi.
