Cedric Coward injury update: Grizzlies rookie doubtful to return vs Lakers

Memphis Grizzlies rookie Cedric Coward went to the locker room on Jan. 4 against the Los Angeles Lakers after an apparent ankle injury.

Coward’s injury appeared to happen after his foot came down on a Lakers player. He was visibly hobbled while limping off the floor and going to the locker room with 2:59 left in the quarter.

He is doubtful to return with a left ankle injury, the team announced.

Coward was putting together a strong performance before leaving the game. He had a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds in the first half for Memphis.

The Grizzlies acquired Coward in the 2025 NBA Draft with the No. 11 overall pick. He has been one of the NBA’s top rookies, averaging 13.7 points and 6.5 rebounds in 33 appearances.
