Was the ‘Stranger Things’ finale all a lie? Fan theories are swirling

WARNING: STRANGER THINGS FINALE SPOILERS AHEAD! DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DON’T WANT THE SERIES FINALE SPOILED!

Ready? OK!

The series finale for Stranger Things was quite the thrill ride. We got the defeat of Vecna and the Mind Flayer, along with the Hawkins crew saving the world from disaster and closing the Upside Down wormhole. We saw some characters almost die, and we saw Eleven sacrifice herself — or did we? There’s a lot open to interpretation, but then there’s a bunch of happy endings for our favorite characters.

That said: There’s a fan theory floating around that I’ve gone very deep on via social media. A lot of folks noted some inconsistencies in Will’s incredible speech in Episode 7, as you can see below. He talked about how the friend group “liked biking to Melvald’s for malted milkshakes” and how they like “getting lose in the woods.”

What’s weird about that? Melvald’s hasn’t served malted milkshakes for decades. Will getting lost in the woods was THE traumatic event of his life. And then there are little hints that Will likes the cold again as he did earlier in the series… when he was under control of the hive mind.

There are other little, subtle hints that COULD suggest that all those happy endings are a lie, that Will and the others are completely under the Mind Flayer’s control still. Those happy endings were VERY happy, after all. But, as you’ll see in the Think Story video below, maybe the Duffer brothers are trying to tell us to interpret the ending as we see fit.

What do YOU think?
