Freezing rain and ice pellets to hit parts of the GTA for Tuesday’s morning commute

Toronto’s morning commute may be over, but the worst of the weather is still ahead.

Environment Canada says several hours of freezing rain are expected to begin near midday Tuesday, with 1 to 5 millimetres of ice accretion possible before the system tapers off early this evening.

The agency warns that untreated surfaces could quickly become icy and hazardous as temperatures hover near the freezing mark.

“Local utility outages are possible. There is risk of injury due to slips and falls.”

“Precipitation may begin early [Tuesday] morning as patchy freezing drizzle before changing to freezing rain,” Environment Canada said for Toronto. “Freezing rain, which may be mixed with snow or ice pellets at times, is expected to change over to rain or snow as an area of low pressure moves through southern Ontario. Areas near the Lake Ontario shoreline may see very little ice accretion or build up.”

Several GTA school boards cancelled buses on Tuesday due to inclement weather. Find out more below.

Rain continues this evening, then mixes with scattered flurries overnight, with a low near 1°C.

Wednesday brings mostly cloudy skies with a few sunny breaks and the chance of flurries, along with lighter west winds and a high of 2°C. By Thursday, expect a mix of sun and cloud, increasing cloud cover late in the day, and rain arriving overnight, with temperatures rising to 4°C.
