Dick’s Sporting Goods closes Central New York store

A popular sporting goods retailer has closed a Central New York store after nearly two decades in business.
Dick’s Sporting Goods in Aurelius, just outside of Auburn, shut its doors for good over the weekend, according to The Citizen. Signs in the windows encouraged customers to visit other DSG locations, such as at Destiny USA in Syracuse, and the Dick’s sign over the entrance has already been removed.
The closing was somewhat expected as a manager told The Citizen in November that its lease was ending in early January and had yet to be renewed. According to Fingerlakes1.com, a site plan from the property manager also listed the store’s 45,500-square-foot space as “available.”
Dick’s Sporting Goods, which has more than 700 stores nationwide, said in November that it had a 5.7% year-over-year sales for the third quarter. However, the company warned that it may be closing underperforming Foot Locker stores, which DSG acquired in 2025 for $2.4 billion, in 2026.
Dick’s Sporting Goods had been operating at the Fingerlakes Crossing Shopping Center in Aurelius, across the street from the Fingerlakes Mall, since 2007. It was the chain’s only location in Cayuga County.
Dick’s Sporting Goods currently has more than 40 locations in New York state, according to its website, including stores in Clay, DeWitt, Ithaca, New Hartford, Syracuse and Watertown. The company, known for selling sports and fitness equipment, clothing and shoes, was founded in Binghamton in 1948.
