- The American Red Cross is facing a potential blood shortage following the holiday season.
- To encourage donations, the Red Cross is offering a chance to win a trip to Super Bowl LX.
- Anyone who donates blood or platelets between January 1 and January 25 is automatically entered.
- The giveaway is intended to address a donation shortfall caused by weather, holidays, and seasonal illness.
Blood donors have a chance at winning a trip to Super Bowl LX after the American Red Cross recently launched a giveaway ahead of one of the biggest sporting events of the year.
The nonprofit organized the sweepstakes as it faces a “growing risk of a blood shortage following the holiday season,” according to a Jan. 5 news release. Red Cross is distributing blood products faster than they’re coming in, the release added.
“Without immediate action, doctors may have to make difficult decisions about which patients receive blood transfusions and who will need to wait,” the nonprofit said.
Frigid temperatures and hazardous weather conditions in December led to thousands of donations going uncollected, according to the Red Cross. Busy holiday schedules and seasonal illnesses only further reduced donations, “significantly straining the Red Cross national blood inventory.”
For a chance to attend Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, the nonprofit is asking U.S. residents to donate throughout January, National Blood Donor Month.
How to enter the Red Cross contest for Super Bowl tickets
Anyone who donates blood or platelets between Jan. 1 and Jan. 25 will automatically be entered for a chance to win a trip to Super Bowl LX.
The winner and a guest will attend the event in Santa Clara and enjoy access to day-of, in-stadium pregame activities, according to the Red Cross. Tickets to the official Super Bowl Experience, round-trip airfare, three-night hotel accommodations and a $1,000 gift card will also be provided, the nonprofit added.
To sign up for a blood donation, people can download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment.
A blood donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of ID are required to check in for donation.
To qualify as a blood donor, individuals must be at least 17 years old in most states, or 16 with parental consent where allowed, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.
High school students and other donors aged 18 and under need to meet specific height and weight requirements.
When is the 2026 Super Bowl?
Super Bowl LX will take place on Sunday, Feb. 8. The NFL playoffs kick off Saturday, Jan. 10, and the final two teams will play each other at Levi’s Stadium. Bad Bunny is scheduled to perform during the halftime show.
This is the seventh year the Red Cross has held the contest. The collaboration has resulted in more than 150,000 first-time blood donors, according to the nonprofit.
A single pint of blood helps save up to three lives, the Red Cross said.
“The start of the new year is a challenging time to collect blood, but it’s also an opportunity to build lifesaving habits,” Paul Sullivan, senior vice president of Donor Services, American Red Cross, said in the Jan. 5 release. “Through our partnership with the NFL, we’re turning ordinary acts of generosity into what we hope is a powerful tradition — ensuring patients have the blood they need, whenever they need it.”
