Canadians have collected a handful of nominations for the Actor Awards, SAG-AFTRA’s annual accolades honouring Hollywood’s best film and television/streaming performances of the year.

The nominations were announced on Wednesday by star Connor Storrie of Heated Rivalry and Abbott Elementary‘s Janelle James.

Seth Rogen and Catherine O’Hara are both nominated for outstanding performance in a leading role, in their respective categories, for Apple TV’s The Studio, which was created by Vancouver-born Rogen.

Martin Short will be up against Rogen in the leading actor category for his performance in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.

Both The Studio and Only Murders in the Building are also nominated for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series.

The awards ceremony will be streamed live on Netflix from Los Angeles on March 1.

One Battle After Another dominates film noms

The Actors, which were previously called the SAG Awards, are a precursor to the Academy Awards, and Wednesday’s nominations could tip the scales for Critics Choice Award-winner One Battle After Another.

The Paul Thomas Anderson film leads the way with a record seven nominations in the movie categories.

It’s up against Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme and Sinners for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.

One Battle After Another’s principal cast members were each nominated in individual acting categories.

Leonardo DiCaprio is up for best actor in a leading role alongside Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Michael B. Jordan for Sinners, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon and Jesse Plemons for Bugonia.

Chase Infiniti, who plays DiCaprio’s daughter, is nominated for best actress. She shares the category with Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue and Bugonia‘s Emma Stone.

One Battle After Another‘s Teyana Taylor is nominated for supporting actress. She’ll compete with Wunmi Mosaku in Sinners, Ariana Grande in Wicked: For Good, Critics Choice Award-winner Amy Madigan in Weapons and Odessa A’zion in Marty Supreme.

The film also scored two supporting actor nominations for Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn. Miles Caton of Sinners, Frankenstein‘s Jacob Elordi, who also picked up a Critics Choice Award this year, and Hamnet‘s Paul Mescal round out the field.

In the 31 years of the SAG Awards, no movie has received more than five nominations.

The film categories saw some notable snubs, including Joachim Trier’s acclaimed Norwegian drama Sentimental Value.

Both Renate Reinsve, in lead female actor, and Stellan Skarsgård, for supporting male actor, have been viewed as shoo-ins to win awards.

Many analysts have considered Skarsgård the favourite to win.

Wagner Moura, star of the Brazilian film The Secret Agent, has also featured prominently in the leading actor race this awards season but missed out on an Actor Award nomination.

With more than 122,000 voting members, SAG-AFTRA has tended to skew more populist, and the guild sometimes shies away from non-English-language nominees.
