Michigan lands Oklahoma transfer Taylor Tatum, former No. 1 RB recruit

Michigan football coach Kyle Whittingham introduced to Crisler crowd

Michigan football coach Kyle Whittingham introduced to Crisler Center in Ann Arbor on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026.

The Michigan football backfield is looking quite deep heading into 2026.

Jordan Marshall announced his return on Wednesday, Jan 7, 2026 running back five-star Savion Hiter moved to Ann Arbor Friday, Jan. 2, and now Taylor Tatum, the former top running back in the nation in the class of 2024, has transferred in from Oklahoma, the Free Press has confirmed.

Tatum was rated No. 1 among running back by 247Sports composite ranking as well as the No. 9 player in Texas and No. 38 player in the country in 2024 when he joined the Sooners and made an immediate impact.

In his first collegiate season, Tatum ran 56 times for 278 yards and three touchdowns. He added another five receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown through the air.

His sophomore year didn’t go as well. Tatum played in just one game, rushing one time for a loss of 1 yard as he dealt with a hamstring injury the entire season.

While Tatum will have to earn his reps, it’s unlikely the former top running back in the nation came to Ann Arbor to be the No. 4 in the backfield, even coming off a disappointing campaign.

So what does that mean for 2025 breakout star Justice Haynes?

Marshall and Hiter are both locked into the mix for next year and while it’s not yet official, so Michigan’s running back room could be quite crowded if Haynes does return to Michigan instead of opting for the NFL or another college season with a different team.

A person inside the Michigan program said his status is undetermined.
