The M60 motorway was shut for hours today (January 8) as police responded to a concern for welfare in Stockport.
All four lanes of the anti-clockwise carriageway were shut between junction 1 and junction 27, close to the town centre, from around 1:30pm. The A6/Wellington Road North, which passes through Stockport and over the motorway, was also shut for several hours as emergency services responded to what they later said was a ‘concern for wellbeing of a member of the public’.
Multiple eyewitnesses said they saw a person being spoken to by emergency services. The incident led over four miles of congestion and delays of up to 40 minutes, with tailbacks all the way back to junction 3 (Kingsway) and junction 2 of the M56.
Both roads were later reopened shortly before 4pm, with police later confirming that the issue had been safely resolved.
A spokesperson for GMP said: “It appears there was a concern for welfare on Wellington Road North that has now been safely resolved.”
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed the fire service had been in attendance ‘regarding concern for the well-being of a member of the public.’
A commenter on Facebook praised the ‘amazing response’ from the emergency services.
