Report: Alex Bregman agrees to five-year, $175M contract with Cubs

Alex Bregman is Chicago-bound

Bregman was back on the open market this winter after opting out of the final two years of the $120-million deal he signed with the Boston Red Sox last off-season.

While he was limited to just 114 games for Boston in 2025 due to a strained right quadriceps, Bregman was a driving force when healthy for the Red Sox. He posted an .821 OPS with 18 home runs and 28 doubles while playing solid defence at the hot corner.

Before the injury in late May, Bregman had done enough to earn the third all-star nod of his career.

The Red Sox spent 2025 raving about Bregman’s leadership, as the now 10-year veteran helped the club make the post-season for the first time since 2021.

Boston earned the second wild-card spot in the American League and was ousted by the New York Yankees in three games.

Before signing with the Red Sox, Bregman spent the first nine years of his career with the Houston Astros, winning the World Series in 2017 and 2022. Over his 10 MLB seasons, the 2015 second-overall pick owns a .272/.365/.481 slash line, 209 homers, 293 doubles and 725 RBIs.

The move is the second significant addition the Cubs have made this week after landing Edward Cabrera in a trade with the Miami Marlins.

Chicago returned to the post-season for the first time since 2017 in 2025. It knocked off the San Diego Padres in the wild-card round before losing to its NL Central rivals, the Milwaukee Brewers, in the NLDS.
