Stellan Skarsgård Wins Golden Globe for Supporting Actor in a Film

Stellan Skarsgård won the Golden Globe for Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Film Role at Sunday’s ceremony for his part in “Sentimental Value,” and he took his short speech as an opportunity endorse the value of seeing movies in theaters.

“I of course was not prepared for this, because I thought that I was too old,” he said as he took the stage. “I’ve got to thank my wife, Megan Everett-Skarsgård. She’s been a brutal support, tough lover, and very educational. And my children have been very educational. I am playing a father that is a bad father, and my children have really told me what a bad father is,” he joked. “But most of all, I am very happy for this, because it is a small Norwegian film with no money for advertising or anything that gets to see the world in this way.”

Skarsgård ended with a vote of support for seeing “Sentimental Value” and other films in theaters. “Hopefully you will see it in the cinema, because they are an extinguished species now. In a cinema, where the lights go down and eventually your chair…the pulse with some other people. That is magic. Cinema should be seen in cinemas.”

He co-stars with Renate Reinsve and Elle Fanning in Joachim Trier’s film about a noted director working on his relationship with his daughters as he prepares a movie starring an American actress. He was also nominated at the European Film Awards as best European actor, and previously won a Golden Globe for the TV mini-series “Chernobyl.”

Skarsgård was nominated alongside Benicio Del Toro for “One Battle After Another,” Jacob Elordi for “Frankenstein,” Sean Penn for “One Battle After Another,” Paul Mescal for “Hamnet” and Adam Sandler for “Jay Kelly.”
