16-year-old found shot to death in bathroom of Chipotle restaurant near Temple University in North Philadelphia identified

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The teenager who was found shot to death inside the bathroom of a Chipotle restaurant near the campus of Temple University has been identified.

Philadelphia police said Tuesday morning the victim is 16-year-old Khyon Smith-Tate of the 2500 block of North Hutchinson Street.

Police are also looking for three possible suspects, all believed to be boys between 16 and 17 years old.

No arrests have been made.

The discovery was made around 5:15 p.m. Monday at the Chipotle on the 1100 block of Montgomery Avenue in North Philadelphia.

Police said the teen, who was shot in the chest, was found by a restaurant employee.

“We’re getting information that the 16-year-old victim was inside with at least one other juvenile male. They asked for keys to the restroom, and that’s when they both went in,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The victim was pronounced dead inside the bathroom, according to police.

“Not only did we find the victim in the bathroom, we found one spent shell casing, so at least one shot was fired from a semi-automatic weapon,” added Small.

It was the first day back from winter break at Temple University. Police say the Chipotle was very crowded at the time of the shooting.

“A lot of students eat here. A lot of people gather at Chipotle,” said Temple senior Chikondi Rose.

“The loss of life to gun violence is a profound tragedy and there are no words that can make sense of it. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones,” said Temple University in a statement.

“This is, of course, deeply upsetting and took place adjacent to our campus in a commercial establishment. We encourage students who are impacted to seek support through Tuttleman Counseling Services,” the statement continued.

Students say they were surprised to return to school and then get a TU alert about a shooting.

“It’s really sad to hear, I mean, a young person like that being found in the bathroom, that’s not something you hear often,” said freshman Finn Glenn.
