1 teen killed, 1 wounded in shooting in Birmingham’s West End

One teen was killed and another wounded when gunfire erupted Saturday night in Birmingham’s West End.

The shooting happened just before 11 p.m. in the 1600 block of Tuscaloosa Avenue.

When the shooting stopped, 18-year-old Brandon McNeal Campbell, of Pleasant Grove was dead and a 17-year-old boy injured from multiple gunshot wounds.

Both victims attended Pleasant Grove High School.

“I am deeply saddened that one of our Pleasant Grove High School seniors was killed in an act of violence, and that another senior from the school was seriously injured,” said Superintendent Walter Consoulin.

“I am praying for the injured student’s recovery, as well as both families as they navigate this tragedy,” Gonsoulin said. “We will do everything we can to support them and the Pleasant Grove High School family.”

Members of the JEFCOED Cares team will be at the school Monday morning, offering counseling services for any student or staff member who needs support.

LaQuitta Wade said West Precinct officers were dispatched at 10:47 p.m. to a report of two people shot. When they arrived, they found a vehicle that had crashed into a tree in the front yard of a residence.

Campbell was in the driver’s seat and the other teen was a passenger.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service rushed both victims to the hospital where Campbell was pronounced dead.

The 17-year-old remains hospitalized.

Wade said it appears both victims were in the vehicle and had arranged to meet with someone in the 1600 block of Woodland Avenue S.W.

During the encounter, the unknown suspect fired multiple shots into the vehicle.

Campbell was able to drive away but then crashed a short time later.

No arrests have been made.

Campbell is the city’s second homicide this year.

The first slaying happened Jan. 3 when a man was shot to death in front of his young daughter in the 8000 block of First Avenue South in the city’s South East Lake community.
