Monks’ 2,300-mile peace walk to reach Charlotte this week: Here’s when, where to see them

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Buddhist monks on a 120-day, 2,300-mile peace walk are approaching Mecklenburg County on Wednesday morning.
The “Walk for Peace” is expected to arrive in the Charlotte area by Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 14, and reach the city by evening. Details on when and where to see the monks in Charlotte are at the bottom of this article.
According to the walk’s Facebook page, the monks — accompanied by their loyal dog, Aloka — are walking from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., to promote awareness of peace, loving-kindness, and compassion across the United States and around the world.

The monks are just over halfway through their journey, having walked for more than 80 consecutive days, with many miles still ahead. This symbolic walk is important for the group to spread their message, which they said is not a protest.
“Of course it hurt, it’s painful, but we do have something inside of us, which is the energy,” said The Vulnerable Bhikkhu Pannakara. “Energy of mindfulness. Those are really, really important, which can support us to walk.”
When and where to see the monks
If you’d like to meet the Monks, you can do so while they’re in Charlotte, between 6 and 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
They plan to stay at the Marion Diehl Recreation Center, so you can expect to find them in the Tyvola Road area of south Charlotte.
