The Saint Paul Patriots were not be denied at the 69th Annual Welland Tribune Basketball Tournament.
After losing the championship game 82-71 to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last year, the Niagara Falls school gained redemption with a 74-65 victory over the Saint Jean-de-Brebeuf Lynx in the championship game Saturday night at Notre Dame.
The Tribune title was the first in the school’s history after losing to Notre Dame last year and to Governor Simcoe in 2004.
“It feels great,” said Saint Paul’s Eric Kaufmann, who scored a game-high 32 points and was named his team’s Policella Homes Player of the Game, the tournament MVP and a First Team All-Star at the conclusion of the tournament. “We came up short last year and we put in a whole lot of work over the past 365 days and we got it done.”
Winning the Tribune was a big deal for the Patriots.
